Norton, McAfee tackle user privacy in Android mobile security apps

Security software makers McAfee and Norton recently added features to their Android apps designed to help users control who can interact with the sensitive information on their smartphones and tablets.

The focus on privacy is aimed at drawing more consumers to pay $30 a year for the apps, which traditionally have been touted as protection against dangerous apps that the security industry calls malware. But Google, which spearheads development of the Android operating system, has said that malware is a mild threat. And consumers have a harder time wrapping their head around malware than privacy.

The latest version of McAfee?s app lets users set up multiple user profiles. For example, a smartphone user could create a children's profile. Then, the user selects apps safe for children to use when borrowing the device.

When that child?s profile is turned on, everything else would be inaccessible until the device owner enters a six-digit code. The profile features work by switching the default user interface, technically known as an app launcher.

Both McAfee and Norton also scan the apps installed on a phone and offer insights into what data the apps access, including contacts and text messages. The McAfee app, for example, identified the Google Play store app as a medium threat on my phone. It rated a slew of other apps as safe while failing to provide any data about other apps, including popular ones such as Vine and Yelp.

Norton?s privacy tool similarly notifies a user if contacts, call logs or photos can be exported by an app. Although it makes sense for Instagram to be able to access photos, a blackjack gaming app probably shouldn?t need the same permission.

Anti-theft features in the app enable a user to remotely wipe data off a phone or track it down if lost or stolen. But the tools can be disabled if the thief or the person finding it resets the phone. Only a LoJack feature available in the Samsung Galaxy S 4 is immune from the hard reset. Still, McAfee marketing director Lianne Caetano said its security app has ?helped users locate their devices millions of times.?

The privacy and app-scanning features could be good deals for people who regularly let others borrow their phone or download apps without doing much research.

But Google seems to be tackling privacy directly in Android, too. And those features are free. The newest version of the Android operating system, 4.3, includes functionality for multiple user profiles -- at least on tablets.

On both smartphones and tablets, Android 4.3 has a hidden feature, App Ops, that enables a user to fine-tune the access an app has to various data.

Adrian Ludwig, Android?s lead security engineer, said in an interview this week that security features are added as broad appeal develops for them.

?Where there is a common problem, it would make sense for us to consider pulling in features to solve it,? he said.

ABI Research senior cybersecurity analyst Michela Menting said fewer than 500,000 individual consumers pay for mobile security apps. But she said that figure should slowly rise as threats evolve and it becomes easier for people to protect multiple devices with a single subscription.

'The Wolverine' claws way to top of box office

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Wolverine" slashed monsters and minions to debut atop the weekend box office.

The Fox film featuring Hugh Jackman's sixth turn as the claw-wielding superhero opened with $55 million in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Last weekend's top movie, Warner Bros.' low-budget horror "The Conjuring," slipped to second place, adding another $22.1 million to its take.

"Despicable Me 2" was in third with $16 million. The Universal animated sequel, with its cast of cute, yellow minions, has made more than $600 million worldwide since it came out four weeks ago.

"The Wolverine," which is set in Japan and features an international cast, earned another $86.1 million overseas. The film's opening-week take surpassed the $120 million it cost to make, said Chris Aronson, Fox's head of domestic distribution.

"It's a huge opening for the clawed one," he said. "It played equally well from Maine to Maui."

Another Fox film, the animated snail-racing tale "Turbo," was in fourth place with $13.3 million. Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2" followed with $11.5 million.

Woody Allen's latest, "Blue Jasmine," enjoyed a stellar opening of its own, though on a much smaller scale. Starring Cate Blanchett, the film opened in just six theaters but still collected $612,767.

"It's one of the biggest opening per-theater averages ever for a non-animated film," said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Ticket sales this weekend were up almost 30 percent over the same weekend last summer, he said.

"It was a good weekend to be a moviegoer because the choices just got a lot more interesting," Dergarabedian said, noting a mix that includes animated, independent and big-budget action offerings.

"Fruitvale Station," the Sundance winner already generating Oscar buzz, expanded to theaters across the country and edged its way into the top 10, contributing to a summer box office that is up more than 10 percent over last year.

Washington Nationals: Ramos, Jordan lead Nationals to 14-1 rout of Mets

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wilson Ramos hit a grand slam and rookie right-hander Taylor Jordan had six strong innings for his first major league win to lead the Washington Nationals to a 14-1 rout of the New York Mets on Sunday.

The Nationals won their third game in a row and fourth in five to salvage a tumultuous 11-game homestand.

They lost the first six games after the All-Star break, fired hitting coach Rick Eckstein last Monday and demoted former closer Drew Storen to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.

Mets right-hander Carlos Torres (1-2) could not build on his solid start last week against the Atlanta Braves.

He allowed eight runs and nine hits in just three innings. Ramos had his third-inning grand slam. He ripped a 2-1 pitch into the left-field stands to cap a five-run inning.

Jordan (1-3), making his sixth career start, earned his first victory. The 24-year-old held New York to five hits in six innings.

The Nats set season highs in runs and hits (18) and battered Torres. Ramos singled home Ian Desmond in the second inning to start the scoring. Bryce Harper followed two batters later with a two-out single on a 3-2 count that scored two more runs to make it 3-0.

Ryan Zimmerman led off the third inning with a single and scored on a Desmond base hit prior to Ramos' grand slam. Zimmerman finished 3-for-4 with a double.

Ramos tied a career high with five RBIs - the second time this month he's done so. Ramos also had five RBIs on July 4 against Milwaukee. The grand slam was the first of his career.

Jayson Werth and Denard Span both added RBI singles in the fourth inning to make it 10-1. Washington was 9-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Things turned sloppy for the Mets in the sixth inning when reliever David Aardsma and catcher John Buck combined on a two-out wild pitch followed by a passed ball. That allowed Werth to advance to third base. Desmond singled him home.

Span, who entered the weekend without a home run since last Oct. 2, then hit his second in as many days. That line drive over the fence in right made it 13-1. Span finished with four hits, the first time he'd done so since July 31, 2012.

Desmond reached base five times, drove in three runs and posted his third four-hit game of the year.

The only Mets run came on a fourth-inning single to right by Marlon Byrd. That drove home Eric Young. Jordan struck out a career-best seven batters and walked just one.

Jordan, who began the season at Class A Potomac, has become a key part of a Nats rotation that is missing left-hander Ross Detwiler, on the 15-day disabled list with a herniated disc in his back, and has seen veteran Dan Haren (5-1, 5.49) struggle.

Jordan is on an innings limit in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery in 2011. Washington manager Davey Johnson said earlier in the week that Jordan has between 20 to 30 innings remaining before the organization ends his season. He is at 125 2-3 total innings with 35 1-3 of those in the majors.

NOTES: Mets third baseman David Wright was not in the starting lineup for just the third time this season It was a non-injury day off, "which he certainly needs," said New York manager Terry Collins. ... On Monday, the Mets continue an eight-game road trip with the start of a three-game series in Miami against the last-place Marlins. ... RHP Jeremy Hefner (4-8, 4.17) pitches for New York against RHP Jacob Turner (3-3, 2.49). ... The Mets are 3-8 against the Marlins this season. ... The Nationals are off on Monday. They begin a five-game road trip on Tuesday in Detroit. ... RHP Stephen Strasburg (5-8, 2.85) starts for Washington against RHP Anibal Sanchez (8-7, 2.68).
