Norton, McAfee tackle user privacy in Android mobile security apps

Security software makers McAfee and Norton recently added features to their Android apps designed to help users control who can interact with the sensitive information on their smartphones and tablets.

The focus on privacy is aimed at drawing more consumers to pay $30 a year for the apps, which traditionally have been touted as protection against dangerous apps that the security industry calls malware. But Google, which spearheads development of the Android operating system, has said that malware is a mild threat. And consumers have a harder time wrapping their head around malware than privacy.

The latest version of McAfee?s app lets users set up multiple user profiles. For example, a smartphone user could create a children's profile. Then, the user selects apps safe for children to use when borrowing the device.

When that child?s profile is turned on, everything else would be inaccessible until the device owner enters a six-digit code. The profile features work by switching the default user interface, technically known as an app launcher.

PHOTOS: Six things rich tech execs splurge on

Both McAfee and Norton also scan the apps installed on a phone and offer insights into what data the apps access, including contacts and text messages. The McAfee app, for example, identified the Google Play store app as a medium threat on my phone. It rated a slew of other apps as safe while failing to provide any data about other apps, including popular ones such as Vine and Yelp.

Norton?s privacy tool similarly notifies a user if contacts, call logs or photos can be exported by an app. Although it makes sense for Instagram to be able to access photos, a blackjack gaming app probably shouldn?t need the same permission.

Anti-theft features in the app enable a user to remotely wipe data off a phone or track it down if lost or stolen. But the tools can be disabled if the thief or the person finding it resets the phone. Only a LoJack feature available in the Samsung Galaxy S 4 is immune from the hard reset. Still, McAfee marketing director Lianne Caetano said its security app has ?helped users locate their devices millions of times.?

The privacy and app-scanning features could be good deals for people who regularly let others borrow their phone or download apps without doing much research.

But Google seems to be tackling privacy directly in Android, too. And those features are free. The newest version of the Android operating system, 4.3, includes functionality for multiple user profiles -- at least on tablets.

On both smartphones and tablets, Android 4.3 has a hidden feature, App Ops, that enables a user to fine-tune the access an app has to various data.

Adrian Ludwig, Android?s lead security engineer, said in an interview this week that security features are added as broad appeal develops for them.

?Where there is a common problem, it would make sense for us to consider pulling in features to solve it,? he said.

ABI Research senior cybersecurity analyst Michela Menting said fewer than 500,000 individual consumers pay for mobile security apps. But she said that figure should slowly rise as threats evolve and it becomes easier for people to protect multiple devices with a single subscription.

'The Wolverine' claws way to top of box office

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Wolverine" slashed monsters and minions to debut atop the weekend box office.

The Fox film featuring Hugh Jackman's sixth turn as the claw-wielding superhero opened with $55 million in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Last weekend's top movie, Warner Bros.' low-budget horror "The Conjuring," slipped to second place, adding another $22.1 million to its take.

"Despicable Me 2" was in third with $16 million. The Universal animated sequel, with its cast of cute, yellow minions, has made more than $600 million worldwide since it came out four weeks ago.

"The Wolverine," which is set in Japan and features an international cast, earned another $86.1 million overseas. The film's opening-week take surpassed the $120 million it cost to make, said Chris Aronson, Fox's head of domestic distribution.

"It's a huge opening for the clawed one," he said. "It played equally well from Maine to Maui."

Another Fox film, the animated snail-racing tale "Turbo," was in fourth place with $13.3 million. Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2" followed with $11.5 million.

Woody Allen's latest, "Blue Jasmine," enjoyed a stellar opening of its own, though on a much smaller scale. Starring Cate Blanchett, the film opened in just six theaters but still collected $612,767.

"It's one of the biggest opening per-theater averages ever for a non-animated film," said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Ticket sales this weekend were up almost 30 percent over the same weekend last summer, he said.

"It was a good weekend to be a moviegoer because the choices just got a lot more interesting," Dergarabedian said, noting a mix that includes animated, independent and big-budget action offerings.

"Fruitvale Station," the Sundance winner already generating Oscar buzz, expanded to theaters across the country and edged its way into the top 10, contributing to a summer box office that is up more than 10 percent over last year.

Washington Nationals: Ramos, Jordan lead Nationals to 14-1 rout of Mets

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wilson Ramos hit a grand slam and rookie right-hander Taylor Jordan had six strong innings for his first major league win to lead the Washington Nationals to a 14-1 rout of the New York Mets on Sunday.

The Nationals won their third game in a row and fourth in five to salvage a tumultuous 11-game homestand.

They lost the first six games after the All-Star break, fired hitting coach Rick Eckstein last Monday and demoted former closer Drew Storen to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.

Mets right-hander Carlos Torres (1-2) could not build on his solid start last week against the Atlanta Braves.

He allowed eight runs and nine hits in just three innings. Ramos had his third-inning grand slam. He ripped a 2-1 pitch into the left-field stands to cap a five-run inning.

Jordan (1-3), making his sixth career start, earned his first victory. The 24-year-old held New York to five hits in six innings.

The Nats set season highs in runs and hits (18) and battered Torres. Ramos singled home Ian Desmond in the second inning to start the scoring. Bryce Harper followed two batters later with a two-out single on a 3-2 count that scored two more runs to make it 3-0.

Ryan Zimmerman led off the third inning with a single and scored on a Desmond base hit prior to Ramos' grand slam. Zimmerman finished 3-for-4 with a double.

Ramos tied a career high with five RBIs - the second time this month he's done so. Ramos also had five RBIs on July 4 against Milwaukee. The grand slam was the first of his career.

Jayson Werth and Denard Span both added RBI singles in the fourth inning to make it 10-1. Washington was 9-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Things turned sloppy for the Mets in the sixth inning when reliever David Aardsma and catcher John Buck combined on a two-out wild pitch followed by a passed ball. That allowed Werth to advance to third base. Desmond singled him home.

Span, who entered the weekend without a home run since last Oct. 2, then hit his second in as many days. That line drive over the fence in right made it 13-1. Span finished with four hits, the first time he'd done so since July 31, 2012.

Desmond reached base five times, drove in three runs and posted his third four-hit game of the year.

The only Mets run came on a fourth-inning single to right by Marlon Byrd. That drove home Eric Young. Jordan struck out a career-best seven batters and walked just one.

Jordan, who began the season at Class A Potomac, has become a key part of a Nats rotation that is missing left-hander Ross Detwiler, on the 15-day disabled list with a herniated disc in his back, and has seen veteran Dan Haren (5-1, 5.49) struggle.

Jordan is on an innings limit in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery in 2011. Washington manager Davey Johnson said earlier in the week that Jordan has between 20 to 30 innings remaining before the organization ends his season. He is at 125 2-3 total innings with 35 1-3 of those in the majors.

NOTES: Mets third baseman David Wright was not in the starting lineup for just the third time this season It was a non-injury day off, "which he certainly needs," said New York manager Terry Collins. ... On Monday, the Mets continue an eight-game road trip with the start of a three-game series in Miami against the last-place Marlins. ... RHP Jeremy Hefner (4-8, 4.17) pitches for New York against RHP Jacob Turner (3-3, 2.49). ... The Mets are 3-8 against the Marlins this season. ... The Nationals are off on Monday. They begin a five-game road trip on Tuesday in Detroit. ... RHP Stephen Strasburg (5-8, 2.85) starts for Washington against RHP Anibal Sanchez (8-7, 2.68).

Microsoft's Math-Challenged STEM Education Contest

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: slashdot.org --- Sunday, July 28, 2013
theodp writes "As noted earlier, Microsoft is tackling the CS education crisis with a popularity contest that will award $100K in donations to five technology education nonprofits that help make kids technically literate. Hopefully, the nonprofits will teach kids that the contest's voting Leader Board is a particularly good example of what-not-to-do technically. In addition to cherry-picking the less-pathetic vote totals to make its Leader Board, Microsoft also uses some dubious rounding code that transforms the original voting data into misleading percentages. Indeed, developer tools reveal that the top five leaders in the Microsoft STEM education contest miraculously account for 130% of the vote. Let's hope the quality control is better for those Microsoft Surface voting machines!" Read more of this story at Slashdot. ...

ShopTV 't-commerce' app for Samsung Smart TVs peddles items seen on shows

DNP Samsung ShopTV

Recovering shopaholics better steer clear of Delivery Agent's new app for Samsung Smart TVs -- if it actually does what the firm says, that is. It claims the inanely named ShopTV ties into a huge database of items and makes merchandise on the shows or commercials you're watching available for purchase. An update rolling out later this year will supposedly let you simultaneously watch and shop in an effort to empty your wallet (or worse, your life savings) even faster. If you're the type who goes gaga over HSN, we suggest installing some games to distract yourself from the temptation.

Church of Scientology National Affairs Office Hosts Mandela Day Tribute

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) July 20, 2013

Diplomats, leaders and community activists gathered at the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office July 18 in observance of United Nations Nelson Mandela International Day for Freedom Justice and Democracy. Service to others was the keynote of the day.

Attendees participated in a video conference with Prince Unathi Mtirara, great-nephew of Nelson Mandela, CEO of Opera South Africa and board member of Nelson Mandela Library. Emphasizing that service is Mandela?s hallmark, Prince Unathi encouraged those assembled to continue and to increase their work to help their communities, saying ?We?re asking for your service. And I am proud of what you have already done.?????

Service was also the theme of the presentation by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Ellen DeShazer. Judge DeShazer presides over a drug court that diverts individuals charged with nonviolent drug offenses and chronic substance abuse issues out of the local jail and state prison systems and into treatment. ?Every day, you should be doing the hard work of changing your neighbor. Start with him and then move on and out,? she said.

The event crowned a day of activities organized by The Way to Happiness Foundation Washington D.C. Chapter that included a community cleanup at Rose Park and Rock Creek Park, removing bottles, cans, trash and painting over graffiti.

The Way to Happiness, written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, is a moral code based on common sense. More than 100 million copies of The Way to Happiness have been distributed in 205 countries and territories, providing a moral compass anyone can live by.

Judge DeShazer spoke of the benefit of this booklet in helping to change the lives of others for the better. ?I always have copies of The Way to Happiness to give away,? she said. ?It is a wonderful book that offers guidance, structure and tools to live by.?

Also featured at the evening?s tribute were humanitarian and community betterment groups including the International Child Art Foundation, Rebecca Project for Human Rights, National Action Network, and National Federation of the Blind.

Nelson Mandela International Day was officially declared by the UN in 2009 and is celebrated annually around the world to honor Nelson Mandela?s life and to mark his birthday with an international call to action promoting peace, equality, diversity, tolerance and mutual respect.

Buy an Apple iPhone 5 or iPad mini this summer and get free ?35 App Store voucher

Apple is throwing in a free App Store gift card with all iPad, iPhone and Mac purchases made by students this summer.

It says a new digital study buddy will help boffins "revise for exams, take notes and stay organised" in the next academic year, but it also means you could Instagram or Vine the hell out of Freshers' Week and attempt to master Traktor's virtual DJ app.

Any student that buys an iPad or iPhone will get a ?35 Apple Gift Card to spend on apps, music, games or eBooks, across the App Store, iTunes and iBookstore.

Buy a Mac and your splurge on the house will go even further, as you'll get a ?70 gift card on top of the standard 15 per cent student discount.

Considering that buying an iPhone 5 right out of the shop with no contract is ?529 - and the cheapest contracts start in the region of the ?32 a month (plus ?29 upfront) available on Three - the deal may not get typically cash-conscious students running to the local Apple Store.

Applied to an iPad, however, the deal is more attractive. With an iPad Mini starting at ?269, it becomes tempting if you plan to spend the ?35 voucher wisely.

There are, of course, a number of much cheaper tablets out there - the Kindle Fire and various Acer, Asus and HP offerings - but none quite compare to the feel, look and functionality of an iPad. The Samsung Galaxy tablets that hold their own against the iPad family retail for only a fraction less, so if you're caught between the two, this could be the sweetener you need.

For the deal to make any great impact on a Mac purchase, you would have to go for the cheapest on offer; the 11in MacBook Air is ?849, before student discount. Be warned though - as beautiful a piece of kit as it is, the Air is so stripped back that it lacks some features that students may find attractive, such as an optical drive for watching DVDs.

However, if you were already planning on getting a Mac before seeing the deal, the ?70 gift card will be a welcome extra that could make a nice dent in pricier software essentials, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.

So just what could you spend your complementary App Store vouchers on? Here are some of the best iPad apps for students:

MoneyBook - an app to help you keep track of your finances, ?1.99.

Keynote - a presentation tool similar to PowerPoint, ?13.99.

iStudiez Pro?-?an app that can assist you in managing your academic and social life, ?6.99.

Traktor DJ - virtual DJ software, currently free as an App Store fifth birthday offer, but usually ?13.99.

iMovie - easily edit video footage together without having to upload to your laptop, ?2.99.

Fruit Ninja - the perfect game to keep you occupied in boring lectures. Thought and concentration strictly optional, 69p.

iThoughts HD - a digital mind mapping tool for those who like decorative revision notes, ?6.99.

U.S. Army Europe commander joins senior military leaders for visit to exercise Rapid Trident 2013

YAVORIV, Ukraine -- U.S. Army Europe Commanding General Lt. Gen. Donald Campbell Jr. joined 23 other senior military and civilian officials July 17 to observe training here as part of exercise Rapid Trident 2013.

The visitors included U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft, Ukrainian Land Forces Commander Col. Gen. Genadiy Vorobiov, Ukrainian Chief Deputy of the First General Staff Adm. Igor Kabanenko and several ranking partner nation officers.

Rapid Trident 2013 is a U.S. Army Europe-led, multinational field training and command post exercise taking place at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv that involves approximately 1,300 troops from 17 nations. The exercise is designed to enhance interoperability between forces and promote regional stability and security. The exercise began July 8 and ends tomorrow.

Campbell and other distinguished visitors watched demonstrations and discussed ways to improve the exercise and how Rapid Trident affects multinational cooperation and battlefield readiness.

"It is an important exercise every year that allows the United States to participate with multiple nations and our good friends in Ukraine," said Campbell.

The first demonstration involved a British platoon from the Royal Irish Regiment defending a position and bringing in air support followed by a Ukrainian helicopter-borne quick-reaction force to support the platoon's counterattack.

Paratroopers from the 3rd Platoon of USAREUR's Attack Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), demonstrated how to react to an ambush while travelling in vehicles. During that demonstration the paratroopers radioed Ukrainian medical helicopters to land and evacuate a simulated casualty.

Others scenario involved Ukrainian paratroopers calling in helicopter gunships to suppress a suspected terrorist camp before parachuting in to secure the camp; Romanian mechanized forces demonstrating a raid to capture a high-value target hiding in a building within a specified time limit; and a Ukrainian pararescue team jumping in to support ground troops by evacuating a simulated casualty into a hovering helicopter with a hoist.

"The opportunity to see the training center first-hand and to receive excellent briefing throughout the whole exercise has really been a highlight," said Campbell. "I believe we have certainly met the training objectives for Rapid Trident 2013."

The amendment introduced by Rep. Tim Huelskamp of Kansas after the Supreme Court struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act deeming it unconstitutional has 38 sponsors but none of the senior members of the House GOP leadership team have signed on to co-sponsored the measure. Yesterday though West Virginia Rep. Joe Biden: The Most Misunderstood Man in Washington

"Keep going straight here," Joe Biden says. We've been at this for hours, climbing in and out of the SUV to look at stuff, a water tower, a stone wall, the house where the most beautiful girl in the world lived, hoagies, Herman the German's gas station, Meyers-eats-tires tire shop, the house where another most beautiful girl in the world lived, and he's holding up better than the rest of us. He never winces, has no achy knees, no lower-back anything, neck, joints; for the guy rockin' the Ray-Ban aviators, 70 is the new 60. "Wait, there's Little Italy down there," he says, peering out the window. "A lot of great Italian restaurants. If there's anybody down there who doesn't vote for me, I haven't found them yet. But I will. I will.

"Okay, in the interest of time, we'll stop here. Let's get out here."

It's his old street. His house. Small white brick. Black shutters. Cement path. A perfectly average 1950s American neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware, now with a motorcade parked along Wilson Road and Secret Service guys swarming and the vice president of the United States wandering, leading fast. "Hi there," he says to a guy with a leaf blower. "I lived here for twenty years. Mack? Hey, Mack. I'm Joe. You're living in a house a guy named Kenny Horn used to live in. Kenny Horn.

"Okay, the driveway, watch yourself. So this is the house. That was my bedroom. I lived there with my brothers Jimmy, Frankie, and my Uncle Ed. One bureau, four drawers, everybody got a drawer. My sister, the princess Valerie, had her own room. Which was ten by twelve. But she deserved it. And my dad took great pride in having that barbecue pit." He circles the house, heads to the back door. "I wish I knew who lived here, because I would show you my room."

Uncle Ed, they called him Uncle Boo-Boo. Brilliant guy. Sprawling intellect. He stuttered. Way worse than Biden stuttered as a boy, which was bad enough. Uncle Boo-Boo never got past it. Never married. Dud job. Drank. Drank a lot. He served as an example of what could happen if you didn't rehearse, didn't practice getting your mouth unstuck. Biden has never had a drink.

"Oh, what the hell." He charges up to the back door, knocks. "Hello? Hello?" We stand on the back deck, waiting. Two Secret Service guys have their backs to us, stationed like owls by the picket fence.

???

"He wants to be the best vice president ever," staffers told me, months ago, when I first started spending time with Joe Biden. That was all the talk last winter. Hillary would almost certainly be the nominee, not Biden, they said, whenever the 2016 issue came up, which wasn't often. But then, abruptly, Biden's stock started steeply rising, at least in the eyes of the public. Washington had been hyperventilating about the fiscal cliff, and Obama sent Biden in to broker a deal. Then came the killings in Newtown, Connecticut, and Obama sent Biden out to rally the public, Biden in to reason with Congress, Biden over to talk to the NRA. In 2013, Biden has emerged increasingly more visibly potent than his boss. THE MOST INFLUENTIAL VICE PRESIDENT IN HISTORY? one headline proffered.

"Well, he would be crazy not to keep his options open," staffers started saying then, whenever the 2016 issue came up. Which still wasn't often. The parlor game was not my reason for being there. I wanted to get to know Biden. I wanted to understand why "President Joe Biden" has such a preposterous ring to it, and I wanted to know if he knew it did.

There's a joke. Something fundamentally comical. That's where the public starts with Biden. I recognized it in Rome, when I traveled with him to the pope's inauguration. He was meeting with friends, presidents from across the globe. Because Joe Biden has been at this so long, don't forget, that he is the stuff of middle-school civics exams. I saw him freelance a grand Joe Biden entrance into President Giorgio Napolitano's palace, teeth gleaming, arms fully outstretched, ready to hug this guy, that guy, Hey, guys! I'm here! You're here! We're beautiful! Decked out in his smooth blue suit, white pocket square?his broad smile the kind a man reserves for his bowling team. This demeanor contrasted sharply with everyone else's. Guards in shiny helmets sprouting horsehair ponytails, bedraggled White House advance team in smart skirts and solid-color pumps. A Biden entrance can make the stuffiest event intimate, for an instant human and vaguely...funny.

Sunshine, apt and miraculous, broke through the day of the pope's installation Mass. "Your Holiness, this is my sister, Valerie," Biden said. The pope. Joe Biden and the pope. Val was next to him in her long black chapel veil, the two of them together at church just like back in Wilmington, and Scranton before. Except it was the Vatican. In the reception line, Val didn't kiss the pope's ring, and Biden didn't kiss the pope's ring (to be fair, plenty of people didn't kiss the pope's ring), because they are Bidens, equal, not below or above anyone, not the pope, not some schlub on the street. "Nobody is better than you." That's the message their mom hammered into their heads. "You're not better than anybody, but nobody is better than you."

JOE BIDEN DOESN'T KISS UP TO ANYONE, international headlines read later that day, which made it sound way more hostile than his mom ever meant it.

Then an image was tweeted, and for a time retweeted, a picture of Biden in the crowd of worshippers outside Saint Peter's Basilica during the holiest Mass of the twenty-first century. The photo is jammed with faces, Biden in the center of them all. Plenty have on sunglasses. But Biden has on his signature Ray-Bans?the aviators!?and that was what, above all else about his whirlwind trip to Rome, was inexplicably spectacular.

This Smart Scalpel Can Smell Cancer as It Cuts

Cancer surgery is invariably difficult, in part, because doctors have always had a hard time determining exactly where the healthy tissue ends and the tumor begins. Not anymore. A new "intelligent knife" can actually sniff out the cancer cells during an operation and keep the doctor on track.

House Republicans vote to delay Obamacare mandates

By David Lawder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Staging a fresh assault on President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform law, the Republican-led House of Representatives on Wednesday approved largely symbolic legislation to delay key coverage requirements.

The measures, the 38th and 39th House bills to take aim at the 2010 reforms known as Obamacare, would delay for a year the requirement that Americans obtain health insurance and would codify the Obama administration's recent decision to delay the mandate for larger employers to offer health coverage.

The White House's surprise announcement of the one-year employer delay this month sparked a new wave of Republican anger over the healthcare law that threatens to bleed into other issues, such as government spending legislation, in the next fiscal year.

Obama administration officials have insisted that the law's core provision, the requirement for uninsured Americans to obtain subsidized coverage through new online exchanges, will remain in place. Those with no coverage will face tax penalties starting in January.

The House voted 264-161 for the individual delay, and 251-174 in favor of the employer delay, with some Democrats joining the Republican effort.

VENTING FRUSTRATION

The legislation stopped well short of previous efforts to fully repeal Obamacare, but gave Republicans a new chance to vent their frustration at the law and discredit it as the state-run insurance exchanges prepare to open in October.

"The delay of the employer mandate is the latest confirmation of the fatally flawed nature of Obamacare and the need to dismantle it," said Rep. John Kline, a Republican from Minnesota. "It isn't right to deny American families the same relief available to American businesses."

While the legislation faces a White House veto threat and is virtually certain to blocked in the Democratic-controlled Senate, Republicans insist they will keep trying to kill Obamacare and keep it alive as a 2014 campaign issue.

They argue that the law's mandates will drive up healthcare costs, stunt job growth and cause businesses to cut back employee working hours to avoid the coverage requirements.

Many Democrats derided the votes as another political sideshow consuming the House's time and energy. They pointed to new health insurance pricing information released by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday as evidence that the law will reduce coverage costs.

Cuomo's report showed that many New York state residents who buy health insurance next year will most likely see their premiums cut by half [ID:nL1N0FN186].

"What we're hearing right now is the sound of Republican heart rates going up: Obamacare is coming," said Representative Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington state. "These last benefits are going to happen - like it or not - and worse, they're going to work."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Republicans were simply trying "to refight old battles than have been fought."

He said Obama will give a speech on Thursday touting the healthcare law's benefits, including the 8.5 million consumers who are receiving an average $100 rebate this summer from insurance companies. The rebates are due to a provision in the law that requires companies to spend at least 80 percent of premiums on medical care, rather than on administrative costs.

Warner 'gutted' by any role in coach's axing

Australian batsman David Warner has admitted he is devastated by the idea that his off-field behaviour may have played a part in the sacking of national coach Mickey Arthur.

Arthur was sensationally ditched just days out from the first Ashes Test, apparently paying the price for a 4-0 Test series loss in India, a poor Champions Trophy campaign and a lack of player discipline.

This last was highlighted by an incident in which Warner punched England's Joe Root in a Birmingham bar following a Champions Trophy defeat.

"It was probably another thing that was gutting, that I may have played a part in that," Warner said on Monday.

Warner served a ban for the incident but without having played in any warm-up matches was left out of the Australia side which played the first Ashes Test and lost to England. He will now play with Australia A in Zimbabwe and South Africa to gain match practice.

Speaking on the eve of his departure from London, Warner, 26, spoke of his devastation at not being selected to play the first Ashes Test, saying he "kind of broke down" when he told his mum.

"(It's) massive to miss a Test. As a kid growing up, you want to play in the Ashes and after that incident I went back to my room and I was pretty shattered for a week and a half, two weeks. I still feel the guilt of what happened. I feel myself it's led to me being in this situation at the moment," he said.

"Things would have been different, I would have been able to play those warm-up games and I could have pressed my claims to play in that first Test but that's me. I put my hand up and accepted the consequences and now it's about me trying to put as many runs on the board in these next two games (in Harare and Pretoria) and press forward."

Warner said new coach Darren Lehmann had told him to "go out there and score runs and be myself". "Just get that X factor back that I can have for this team."

He said there were no bans or curfews imposed on him, but he was well aware of the consequences of any further misbehaviour.

"I know if I stuff up again I'm on the first plane home," he said. "No one needs to tell you that because you already know it."

Obama Hints Of Possible Nomination Of NYC ... - Business Insider

Ray Kelly NYPD

Ramin Talaie/Getty Images

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly would be "well-qualified" to run the Department of Homeland Security.

Kelly has been floated as a possible replacement for outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. She's leaving to take over the University of California system.

Obama didn't confirm whether he is actively considering nominating Kelly, saying the commissioner "might be very happy where he is." But Obama says if Kelly isn't, he'd want to know about it because Kelly would be well-qualified for the Homeland Security post.

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York has said he wants Obama to nominate Kelly.

The president spoke in an interview with Univision's affiliate in the New York/New Jersey area.

Live interview with SAP Canada's new managing director | IT Business

Meet the new managing director of SAP Canada Bob Elliott. We did a live Google Hangouts on Air interview with Elliott and fielded questions from social media for him. You can watch the full interview video hear or scroll down to read the Q&A.

Earlier this month, Elliot replaced Mark Aboud at the software firm. Aboud is going to run SAP?s global sales division after six years of leading the Canadian subsidiary. Elliott is being promoted from his position of national vice president of sales, where he was responsible for SAP licence sales and overseeing leaders in various regional and vertical sector teams at SAP. He holds a bachelor of arts in economics from Western University. Elliott will be responsible for more than 2,300 employees in Canada.

Here?s how Elliott responded to my questions during the interview above. Answers have been edited for clarity and paraphrased in some cases.

Brian Jackson: Mark Aboud has been the managing director of SAP Canada for six years and now you?re taking the helm. What changes can we expect to see?

Bob Elliott:?Mark and I joined SAP around the same time and I have been his right-hand man at the company. ?He?s been grooming me to fill his big shoes.? So the change will be an evolutionary one rather than revolutionary. Also expect to see an increased focus on cloud-based software, the HANA platform, and big data.

BJ: You?re coming into this role from the sales side of the organization, having ?been with the firm since 2007. How will that inform your approach as managing director?

BE:??SAP is at its heart a sales company. Everyone?s job is to sell software and deliver on that software to our customers.? Customers vote with their pocketbooks and if a particular product or service isn?t selling well, then it?s not meeting customer demand and something has to be done. SAP Canada has about 1,500 employees in development labs and we try to get these folks out in front of the customer whenever possible. A big priority is to put the development team closer to the customer. So teams are often spending time with customers out in the field. SAP has organized its development staff into agile teams of no more than 10 people each, so they can quickly react to customer feedback.

BJ: I attended your Sapphire conference back in January and there was a lot of focus on ?shifting to software-as-a-service delivery model, especially with your recent acquisitions of SuccessFactors and Ariba. How do you see your role in pursuing that objective?

BE:?The cloud thrust at SAP is being driven by customer demand, and it is becoming a cloud-first company. This makes for a tricky financial transition because the company used to depend on an up-front licence fee and then maintenance costs. ?We don?t have those sort of lumpy upfront payments when the licence is done. We have to cross that chasm from less up-front licence fees to ?more ongoing fees.? But this results in more predictable and consistent income for SAP and its shareholders in the end.

Data residency is also an issue SAP is looking at in Canada and it?s talking with some Canadian data centre providers. SAP will have a number of cloud offerings that it needs to support. It is also looking to expand its channel efforts on the cloud front by asking channel partners to complement SAP offerings with hosted services. There are currently about 8,000 SAP customers in Canada and most of them are below $1 million in revenue.

?We have a mature set of resellers that cover the ERP and analytics space on premises.? Would like to see those partners offering those products both on premises and in a hosted model. There?s also verticals like healthcare and higher education where SAP could use some more reseller support as it lacks direct coverage.

BJ:?HANA was also a big theme at Sapphire of course. It?s been identified as your platform for all cloud services. How do you plan to communicate what this means for your Canadian clients?

BE:?I?m eager to communicate early and often and at every opportunity about our new platform. ?A lot of customers and partners still think of SAP as an IT company when that?s really a small part of my business.? This presents a big opportunity for enterprises to take advantage of big data and it also underpins every single solution for SAP whether its in the cloud or on-premises. We?re expecting to see the ERP Suite on HANA see double or triple digit growth as this will allow companies to run the software in real-time and immediately gain insights from it.

BJ: SAP is better known as an enterprise-level vendor. Are you planning any out reach efforts for the SMB market?

BE:??The most explosive growth we?ll see for the foreseeable future will be in the mid-size market.? This will be pursued largely through a channel strategy. SAP will also be increasing its marketing budget in this area.

?It?s like the wake behind the boat. A lot of the market might think of SAP as an ERP company? but we?re actually the number one cloud company by paying subscribers in the world.?

HANA in the cloud offers the mid-market an opportunity to use Amazon to access this big data engine overnight.

BJ:?I?m going to turn to our social media feeds for any questions from the audience now.

BE:?SuccessFactors is the number one cloud product in SAP?s portfolio. The human capital management (HCM) market probably won?t support all the competitors launching products in this category. ?I can?t predict which one will fall off. But SAP is likely to continue at the forefront of the market.?

Stocks jump after Fed keeps stimulus in place

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market is rising to record highs after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank would continue to support the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 151 points, or 1 percent, to 15,443 after the first few minutes of trading Thursday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 17 points, also 1 percent, to 1,670.

The early advance put the Dow and S&P above their previous record closes set in May.

All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 rose.

Investors also bought bonds after being reassured that the Fed was not in a hurry to pull back on its huge bond-buying program.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.59 percent from 2.63 percent late Wednesday.

Smithfield CEO faces Senate heat over sale to China

By Doug Palmer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of Smithfield Foods on Wednesday faced tough questioning from U.S. lawmakers concerned the proposed sale of Virginia ham maker to China's largest pork producer could hurt U.S. food safety and lead to higher prices for American consumers.

"I think to your constituents back home, it's the same old Smithfield," company President Larry Pope told members of the Senate Agriculture Committee. "Nothing's going to change. This is going to be an American company. We will continue to operate like an American company."

The sale of Smithfield Foods, the world's largest pork producer with more than 46,000 employees in 25 states and four countries, to Shuanghui International Holdings for $4.7 billion would be the biggest Chinese takeover of a U.S. company to date.

Pope acknowledged he would benefit significantly from the proposed sale, but declined to say how much he would gain.

Congress has no direct role in approving or blocking the transaction, but the Senate hearing sheds light on issues facing the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, a panel led by the Treasury Department that examines whether a foreign purchase of a U.S. company poses any national security risk.

"This is a precedent-setting case and we owe it to consumers, producers and workers to ensure we are asking the right questions and evaluating the long-term implications," Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow said in a prepared opening statement.

"Smithfield might be the first (Chinese) acquisition of a major food and agricultural company, but I doubt it will be the last. That is why we must take a long-term view of what is happening," she said.

The Smithfield, Virginia-based company makes ham, sausage, bacon and other prepared meats under labels including Eckrich, Gwaltney, Armour. It has argued the deal is good for United States because it will boost pork exports, and good for China because it will help meet the country's growing demand for pork as hundreds of millions of Chinese move into the middle class.

But some have questioned what kind of production practices Shuanghui could bring to the United States, especially after revolting images this year of thousands of rotting pig carcasses floating down the Huangpu River that runs through Shanghai raised concerns about food safety practices in China.

"Regardless of where the ownership is, this company is going to have to operate under the laws of the United States. We're not operating under the laws of China. We're operating under the auspices of the USDA and food inspection process," Pope said.

Lawmakers have also expressed concern about the impact on the competitiveness of U.S. pork production if Shuanghui gains access to Smithfield's valuable technology and hog genetics.

Stabenow noted that Shuanghui is offering to pay a 30 percent premium for Smithfield even though the American company has been struggling to make a profit.

"That, to me, raises questions about the economic motivations of the purchase. Is Shuanghui focused on acquiring Smithfield's technology, which was developed with considerable assistance by U.S. taxpayers?" Stabenow asked.

Pope said he expected the deal to "drive growth and expansion not only for our growers but for the entire U.S. pork industry." He said China's huge protein deficit made it unlikely it would become a significant pork exporter.

"China is responsible for 50 percent of the world's pork consumption and their demand is still growing, whereas pork demand in the U.S. has been declining for almost 15 years," Pope told the agriculture panel.

The panel also heard from witnesses critical of deal, including Daniel Slane, a businessman who serves on the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, a watchdog panel established by Congress to monitor the Asian heavyweight.

Although Pope told senators the "Chinese government has absolutely no ownership stake or management control in Shuanghui," Slane painted a different portrait of the company, which he called state-controlled.

"Many of the largest Chinese enterprises, including Shuanghui, maintain strategic ties to the Chinese government, whether through direct ownership or control, preferential access to massive government subsidies and personal links to the Chinese government," Slane said in his prepared remarks.

Professor Usha Haley, director of the Robbins Center for Global Business and Strategy at West Virginia University, also questioned Shuanghui's independence and said it would likely continue to benefit from generous Chinese subsidies that would put pressure on other U.S. pork producers.

"U.S. competitors would be forced to reduce their profit margins to compete, and in this consolidated industry, cost-cutting and bankruptcies would ensue in a very short time, perhaps in as little as two to three years," Haley said.

The Shuanghui-Smithfield union provides China access to U.S. land, water, brands and technology, but "the risks are clearer than any long-term benefits" for the United States, she said.

Original: Following regulatory approval of the merger by the FCC, SoftBank has released a statement today indicating that its strategic investment of $21.6 billion (JPY 1.8 trillion) in Sprint is expected to close on July 10th, 2013. While this isn't a complete confirmation, SoftBank feels it is confident enough in the timeframe to release an official statement. The deal will mark a huge investment, giving the Japanese carrier a 78-percent stake in Sprint and hopefully bringing new life into the nation's third-place challenger.

We can expect Sprint and SoftBank to quickly put the money to work on furthering its LTE rollout, as well as its overall network improvements. Together with new spectrum from the shutdown of its iDEN network and finally securing Clearwire's assets, Sprint certainly has a lot going for it.
